Case Study: SharePoint Customizations at LG Electronics

Initial Situation:

The in-house SharePoint 2010 database of LG Technology Center Europe for internal knowledge management of Open Innovation activities needed a major overhaul and expansion. A migration to SharePoint 2016 was also planned for a later stage. The client requested a redesign of the global database’s homepage, both visually and functionally, and an expansion of the environment to include project management capabilities, including approval processes.

Project Execution:

The knowledge database in SharePoint and its significant role in the company’s technology sector required bringing together various global user groups and their interests. bitwork conducted workshops in collaboration with LG Technology Center Europe and planned the future environment. Based on LG’s requirements, a tile-based homepage concept was designed, along with search functions and managed metadata in the form of a terminology relevant to the technology segment. Additionally, the homepage was adapted to address different corporate groups, and a bilingual (English/Korean) login page with password security checks was created for Korean colleagues.

In addition to the homepage, the project management operated through SharePoint lists needed adjustments. This involved modernizing the layout of input forms, simplifying access control for individual projects, and aligning them with customer requirements. Specific workflows for project approval and closure were also integrated to significantly enhance the efficiency of the globally used process.

The migration to SharePoint 2016 was planned for a later stage. A schedule was created with LG for the migration to take place outside of global business hours, usually on weekends due to time zone differences. After the migration was completed, extensive testing ensured that all environments and functions were properly restored.

Given that these were business-critical processes, it was essential for the transition to be as error-free and swift as possible, so that users would not experience significant downtime. In both development and migration, this goal was consistently achieved.
